Diversity of opinion is a hallmark of a strong democracy, but excess political polarization leads us to estrange and vilify those who hold different political opinions from ourselves. Discourse Across Divides is an independent, volunteer-run initiative that aims to mitigate polarization in the US. We bring individuals from across the political spectrum together into conversations that are informed by Jesus’ advice on how to navigate conflicts.
While not all political disagreements have correlates in “sins” or “faults,” the thrust of this message still holds: the spaces to which bring our disagreements matter in how effectively those conflicts can be addressed. Compared to the rhetorically charged debates and monologues found on public stages, the intimacy of a close-quartered, private conversation can more effectively encourage listening and meaningful exchange of ideas. Discourse Across Divides, inspired by programs like Livingroom Conversations and America in One Room, exists to provide such spaces.
