Unity is important for Christians. Jesus prays that his church might be one (John 17:21). Paul calls us to “maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph 4:3). Increasingly, however, Christians have found themselves divided, not by matters of theology or Christian living, but by matters of politics. Political polarization is pitting parents against children, neighbors against one another, and brothers and sisters in Christ against one another. Those who follow Jesus ought to be examples of how to talk across disagreement well. We ought to recognize the humanity of the other; to seek to understand before asking to be understood; to seek truth in love rather than victory in a debate.
Discourse Across Divides aims to humanize individuals from across the political spectrum by aspiring to see one another as God sees us--that is, in all of our contexts of lived experiences and personal stories.
